Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Fireplace Services in Long Island: What to Know First
We service and repair Gelco gas fireplaces, wood-burning units, and inserts across Long Island, and most jobs are done in a single visit. You’ll get the real price before we start, not after we open the firebox. If it doesn’t need fixing, Wendell will tell you that first.
This page is for homeowners who own a Gelco unit that’s acting up: a pilot that won’t stay lit, glass that fogs, a burner that lights unevenly, or a damper that’s jammed. If you’re not sure what you have, call (516) 968-5380 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ve been inside enough Gelco fireboxes on Long Island to know what you’re describing before you finish the sentence.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
Gelco has been around for decades, first as a supplier of gas logs and fireplaces, and over the years we’ve seen certain things come up again and again on Long Island. Here’s what actually goes wrong:
- Thermopile and pilot assembly failure on older Gelco gas log sets. This is the most common call we get. The pilot lights but won’t hold, or the main burner won’t kick on. On the original Gelco G-Series log sets found all over Levittown and Massapequa, the thermopile sits directly in the flame path and burns out over five to eight years. We replace it with a proper OEM-spec unit, not a universal one-size-fits-most from a big-box shelf. The difference matters for flame sensing.
- Gas valve solenoids sticking on Gelco direct-vent inserts. Salt air near the South Shore and humidity in basements up near Huntington does a number on these. Symptoms are a delayed ignition “whoomp” or no ignition at all. The valve clicks but the burner never lights. We clean or replace as needed, and we’ll show you the corrosion on the old one before it goes in the bucket.
- Ceramic log degradation and carbon fluffing. The log sets Gelco shipped in the late 1990s and early 2000s used ceramic fiber that breaks down with heat cycling. You’ll notice white flaky buildup on the logs and a lazy orange flame. Some of that fluffing is cosmetic. Some of it clogs burner ports and throws off the air-fuel mix. We pull the logs, check the burner pan, and tell you if replacement is warranted or if they’ve got years left.
- Glass gasket compression failure. On Gelco sealed combustion units, the rope gasket behind the glass gets flat and brittle over time, especially in homes that run the fireplace hard through long winters. A failed gasket pulls room air into the firebox and pushes combustion gases out where they shouldn’t be. You’ll see condensation between the glass panes. This is a safety issue, and it’s a same-day fix in most cases.
- Vent termination rust-through on exterior walls. Long Island’s humid summers and coastal winters eat through Gelco direct-vent terminations faster than dry-climate homes see. We regularly replace rotted terminations on houses from Freeport to Port Washington. Gelco used steel worm-gear clamps at the termination joint on many models; those clamps fail before the pipe does. We swap in stainless and reseal.
As an independent Gelco service provider, we’re not tied to the manufacturer’s parts pricing or lead times. When a quality aftermarket part does the job as well as OEM, we’ll tell you and save you the markup. When only OEM makes sense, we’ll say that too.
Our Gelco Fireplace Services Process
- 1
You call and talk to a live person, day or night. Describe the symptom. We’ll give you a window when the tech will arrive and an honest range before anyone rings your doorbell.
- 2
The sweep shows up in uniform and in a marked, professional truck. He’ll ask what you’ve noticed, when it started, and whether any other work’s been done on the fireplace recently. Then he gets to work.
- 3
Diagnostics. Pressure checks on the gas line, millivolt tests on the thermopile, inspection of the burner, pan, logs, glass gasket, venting, and termination. We use a camera where it matters so you see what we see.
- 4
The verdict. You get a plain-English explanation of what’s wrong, what needs to be fixed now, and what can wait. The price you hear before we start is the price on the invoice. No add-ons, no “while we’re in there” surprises.
- 5
The repair. We do the work, clean what should be cleaned, test the unit, and fire it to verify it runs right. We leave the fireplace area cleaner than we found it.
- 6
The 90-Day Done Right Promise. On every Gelco job, no exceptions. If something we did isn’t right, one call brings us back at no charge.

Why Long Island Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for Gelco Work
Wendell Pike started Top Hat Chimney in 1999, and he’s been inside Gelco fireplaces from ranch homes in Levittown to older colonials near the North Shore ever since. He grew up in San Diego and learned the trade through the construction and building technology program at San Diego Mesa College, but the better part of three decades of his work has been on Long Island roofs and in Long Island fireboxes. When you call, you get a local operation with a published address and license number, not a rotating door of subcontractors.
We work on the other brands too: DuraFlex liners and HeatShield repairs go hand-in-hand with a lot of Gelco work. If your fireplace overhaul ends up needing a new liner or firebox repair, we don’t have to call in anyone else. And every job, Gelco included, comes with the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. One call brings us back if it’s not right.
FAQs
Every Gelco service and repair we perform is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the work isn’t done right, we come back and make it right at no charge. This is our warranty, independent of Gelco’s original manufacturer warranty. Call (516) 968-5380 to schedule a diagnostic.
Yes. We source OEM Gelco parts and quality aftermarket equivalents from suppliers we’ve worked with for over 20 years. Most common parts (thermopiles, gaskets, valves, termination components) are available same-week. When a part has to be ordered, we’ll tell you before you commit. Call (516) 968-5380 and describe what you need.
Most Gelco repairs are done in a single visit. Diagnostics and repair happen the same day in about 80% of cases. If a part needs ordering, you’ll know before we leave the first visit. To get on the schedule, call (516) 968-5380.
Generally no. Most Gelco failures are component-level: a thermopile, a valve, a gasket, a termination. Repair usually runs well under half the cost of a full unit replacement, and a properly repaired Gelco can run another ten to fifteen years. We’ll tell you plainly if replacement is the smarter long-term move. Call (516) 968-5380 for an honest assessment.
Yes, and that’s most of what we do on Long Island. We service Gelco fireplaces installed by other companies, builders, and previous homeowners. If it’s a Gelco, we can work on it. Call (516) 968-5380 to schedule service.
