Which Famco Models This Applies To

If you have a Famco chimney, the crown is generally installed as part of the cap-and-crown assembly at the very top of the flue. Famco is best known on Long Island for metal chimney caps and weather covers, but many homes paired those caps with a hand-poured concrete crown installed by the original mason or chimney contractor. The part we repair or replace is the poured crown itself, sized to fit the outside dimension of your chimney stack, plus a weather cap if yours came from Famco. Here’s the gotcha: you cannot identify crown compatibility from the cap alone. We need the outside width of the brick or block chase, because the crown is poured to that measurement, not to a part number stamped on the cap. If you have the original invoice from the install, that helps, but half the homes we visit do not. Bring us a photo of the cap and any numbers visible on it, and we can confirm what is Famco-branded versus generic, then measure the rest on site. For OEM versus aftermarket, the crown itself is mixed onsite from concrete rated for vertical weather exposure, so OEM does not apply the way it would for a mechanical component. The Famco cap on top can be kept if it is sound. Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water on the firebox floor after rain. The crown has cracked and rain is traveling down the flue, or along the outside of the flue tile and into the smoke chamber. This is the most common call we get in Nassau and Suffolk counties after a nor’easter.
• White mineral streaks on the brick face below the crown. Efflorescence. Water is being pulled through the masonry and leaving salt deposits behind. If you see white streaks forming a ring around the top third of the chimney, the crown has lost its pitch and water is pooling instead of running off.
• Spalling brick or crumbling mortar at the chimney shoulder. Long Island freeze-thaw is brutal. Water gets into hairline cracks in the fall, freezes in January, and the expansion pops fragments off the crown edge. By spring the crown looks chewed up along the rim.
• The metal Famco cap is lifting, wobbling, or pulling its anchors. A cap is only as solid as the crown it is set into. When the concrete around the anchor points starts to crumble, the cap moves with the wind, and a strong winter gust can send it into the yard.
• Damp drywall or a musty smell near the chimney chase. Water that gets through the crown saturates the flue and the framing around it, even if you never light a fire. This smell sharpens during humid Long Island summers. If you catch it early, we often fix the crown and dry-check the rest without any interior repair needed.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the crown from the ground with a pair of binoculars: look for cracks, tilted cap, crumbling edges, or a sag in the middle where water would pool. You can also snap a clear photo and text it to us for a straight read. What you should not do is get up on the roof to patch it yourself. A wet crown on a Long Island roof with the pitch we see on older colonials is slips and falls territory, and a patch that is mixed wrong or pitched flat will trap water and make the freeze-thaw damage worse than it is now.
