How DuraFlex Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
DuraFlex makes a solid product, but no liner is set-and-forget. Here’s what we actually see in Long Island chimneys:
- Mid-line seam corrosion on DuraFlex 316Ti. DuraFlex’s 316Ti alloy liner holds up well against gas appliance condensate, but we’ve pulled liners from North Shore chimneys where the seam welds showed pitting after only eight or nine seasons. Cause is almost always trapped moisture from a missing or cracked rain cap, not a liner defect. We fix the cap, dry out the flue, and sweep the liner. Nine times out of ten it doesn’t need replacement.
- Creosote glaze in ovalized DuraFlex sections. Long Island homes with larger fireplaces sometimes have ovalized DuraFlex liners snaked through older flue tiles. The oval shape creates a low-flow zone on the long axis, and that’s where third-degree creosote builds up first. It’s a brush-and-glaze-remover job, but only if you catch it early. - Soot packing at the DuraFlex connector. The connector where a DuraFlex liner meets the appliance collar is the most common place we see soot compaction on Long Island oil-burner flues. It happens when the liner wasn’t seated dead level. A standard sweep won’t clear it; you need a rotary whip head and someone who knows not to score the liner while working the connector.
- Roof-level liner kink on DIY installs. We get calls from homeowners in Suffolk County who had a “friend” install a DuraFlex liner down an old clay flue. The liner kinked at the first offset because nobody smooth-pulled it. The symptom is a lazy draft and occasional backpuff. - Mortar droppings trapped in DuraFlex corrugations. Any corrugated flex liner will catch debris, and DuraFlex’s profile is on the grippier side. That’s a two-part fix: sweep out what’s loose, then repair the crown so it stops feeding the flue. Just sweeping won’t do it.
