DuraFlex Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Long Island Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney crown repair materials on Long Island, with most jobs running between $350 and $900 fully installed depending on crown size and how much of the old mortar needs to come out first. We carry crown coat, crown sealer, and full recrown mixes that work with DuraFlex liner systems, and we can usually get to your chimney within a week during the spring and summer months. Most owners find us because they spotted a hairline crack from the ground, or because water started showing up in the firebox after a hard rain, and honestly, that’s the way it usually goes with crowns on the Island: the damage starts small, sits there through two or three freeze-thaw cycles, and then it’s a real problem.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes stainless chimney liner systems, but the crown repair side of the job is about the masonry and sealant work at the top of the flue, where the liner cap assembly sits. The crown works with any DuraFlex liner, whether you have the 304 alloy, the 316 alloy for oil-fired systems, or the smooth-wall version. One thing to know: DuraFlex liner kits come with a top plate and storm collar, and if your crown is cracked, that top plate is no longer doing its job either. Water gets under it, runs down the outside of the liner, and you end up with rust stains on the brick and a damp smell in the firebox. We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with DuraFlex directly, but we install and service their products every week and keep the common crown repair materials on the truck.

If you’re not sure what liner you have, look for the embossed name on the liner itself, usually visible from the top with a flashlight. DuraFlex stamps their name along the length of the pipe. Crown damage doesn’t care which alloy you have, but the fix does need to account for the liner top plate, and we’ve seen plenty of crown repairs that ignored that little detail and failed within two seasons. The crown has to be shaped to shed water properly, with the sealant bonding to both the masonry and the metal collar. That two-material bond is where the failures happen most on Long Island.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Hairline cracks you can see from the ground. These start as thin lines in the old crown mortar and widen with every freeze-thaw cycle. Long Island winters do the rest, and what started as a cosmetic line becomes a water channel by spring.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. This is the telltale. Water runs down the liner, hits the appliance, and pools in the bottom. If you see rust or standing water, the crown has already failed, and the water is doing more damage every storm.
  • White mineral streaks on the brick below the crown. That’s efflorescence, the salts leaching out of the mortar and brick as water pushes through. It means water is inside the masonry, and the crown is the usual entry point.
  • Flaking or spalling brick near the top of the flue. Water saturates the brick, freezes, and the face of the brick pops off. You’ll find brick chips on the roof or in the gutter. The crown wasn’t shedding water the way it should have.
  • A rusted top plate or storm collar on the DuraFlex liner. The collar should be tight and clean. Rust means water sat there, which means the crown wasn’t keeping water away from the metal. That rust will eventually eat through the collar and start on the liner.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

On Long Island, a DuraFlex crown repair with full old-mortar removal, cleaning, and a new crown coat or full recrown runs $350 to $900 installed. A simple seal-and-coat job on a small crown sits at the low end. Full recrown work on a larger chimney, where we’re chipping out the old crown entirely and building it back with proper slope and a drip edge, lands at the higher end. What drives the price is crown size, how much of the old material has to come out, and whether the liner top plate needs to be re-seated while we’re up there.

Every job includes the same thing: we remove what’s failing, prep the surface, apply the new crown material with a proper taper so water runs off, and re-seal the liner collar. You pay one price, and the number on the invoice matches the number on the phone. And every crown repair we do is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not right, one call brings us back, no charge. We also honor a $40 discount on any repair over $200, and seniors and veterans always get 10% off.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things from the ground: look for visible cracks, check for water in the firebox after rain, and ask a neighbor with a ladder if they’re around, but the actual crown repair belongs on a roof with a trained person who understands how the liner top plate and the masonry have to seal together. The danger here is the height. If you’re on a roof on Long Island with a bucket of crown coat and a trowel, one wrong step is a broken hip, and the fix might fail anyway if the surface prep isn’t right. We’ve followed enough homeowner repairs that failed in two years to know it’s not worth the savings. The crown has to be cleaned, primed, and bonded correctly, and the liner collar has to be seated with the right sealant. Get that wrong and the water comes right back.

If it doesn’t need fixing, Wendell Pike will tell you that first. Sometimes a small hairline crack can wait a season, and we’ll tell you that too. But if water is already getting inside, every storm on Long Island is doing real damage. Call (516) 968-5380 and we’ll come take a look. The estimate is free, and we’ll show you the camera footage before anyone picks up a trowel.
